Both of those degrees are sort of bs, easy, cop-out business degrees. I took some of those classes, so I know. Do computer science or computer engineering. Those are real degrees, they are more respected and you will get good jobs with those. They do require some math and science, but if you get through it you will be at an advantage because Americans are bad at math and science (I’m generalizing). Put in the work now.
Maybe you can double major with computer science or computer engineering and one of those business subjects. That’s a good idea even if it takes you five years to get a degree, because you would have a good amount of versatility. Even if you do computer science or computer engineering and you don’t like it or don’t get good jobs from it, you can still go back and get an MBA with one of those concentrations or an MS in MIS. But whatever you do, get good internships.
Look at the web 2.0 companies. Most of the people who create these companies have a background in computer science. All of the instructors in MIS at my university had computer science bachelor’s degrees as their first degrees. That tells you something. All of the people from my hometown who did computer science at my school got good jobs (with tech companies, movie special effects). Of course, hopefully you will base your decisions based on a passion or at least a career you can tolerate.
Of course, I know people who did both of those degrees (entrepreneurship or MIS) who had jobs with big companies out of college. They got them through internships. But they were lucky not to get let go during this crisis. Maybe you can double major in entrepreneurship and computer science in order to hedge your bets.http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/21/techno…

Well, if you’re going to spend your time getting a degree I would go with the MIS. The reason for this is that you aren’t going to impress anyone in the entrepreneurial world with your degree. In that world it’s all about dollars and cents and results. Nobody cares where you came from or what you did as long as you have the cash.
If you really want to go with a degree it would be a complete waste of time. Just get the MIS and read books by successful business men and try to find and learn the rules of business. Here’s a hint…Innovation, Accounting, and Systems.

MIS!! My boyfriend has an MIS degree and he is making 50K just out of school in a rural part of PA!!! (average starting salaries around here are about 28-30K) Computers are so up and coming and a high paying field. You will be bored out your mind, hopefully you like to sit and stare at a computer all day. But you will make the $$$ and move up in pay quickly.
Entrepreneur?? that is for someone starting their own business… they are totally unrelated. With this economy there is no way I would waste my money or time with that degree or with taking such a risk in my own business. No way.
Management Info Systems if you want the dough. And guaranteed the dough in this economy. But you best learn it and learn it WELL. Pay attention in your classes.

The Center for Media Research has released a study by Vertical Response that shows just where many of these ‘Main Street’ players are going with their online dollars. The big winners: e-mail and social media. With only 3.8% of small business folks NOT planning on using e-mail marketing and with social media carrying the perception of being free (which they so rudely discover it is far from free) this should make some in the banner and search crowd a little wary.
